Of twenty-three AI design platforms surveyed in 2026, only about fourteen handle facades or yards at all, and several of those treat it as a bolt-on to an interior product. The interior-only tools are perfectly good at what they do and completely useless the moment you point them at a house.

That gap matters because exterior work is where the money goes. Recladding, reroofing and window replacement are the decisions people most want to see before committing, and they are the ones a mood board helps with least.

Get the photograph right first

Exterior renders fail on input quality far more often than on model quality. Five minutes of care here saves an afternoon of retries.

• Shoot straight on from across the street, not at an angle from the driveway.
• Flat, overcast light. Hard midday shadow bakes itself into the render.
• Get the whole building in frame with a little air around it.
• Move the cars. The model will try to keep them.
• Avoid heavy foliage covering the facade — reshoot in a different season if you must.

Change one variable at a time

The temptation is to prompt for a completely new house. The useful workflow is the opposite: hold everything fixed and change one element, so you can actually attribute what you like to a decision you could make.

Run the same photo through render-versus-brick-versus-timber with identical wording otherwise. Then take the winner and vary the window frames. Then the roof. Masking makes this precise — brush only the cladding and the rest of the image is untouched between variants, which means the comparison is honest.

Twilight, planting and the curb appeal shot

Two changes reliably transform an exterior image out of proportion to their effort: converting a daylight shot to twilight, and maturing the planting. Both are single prompts. Both are also the two changes most likely to mislead — a twilight render with fifteen-year-old landscaping is selling a house that will not exist for fifteen years.

Use them for aspiration and inspiration freely. If the image is going into a property listing, disclose that it is a render, and keep a clean unstaged photo alongside it.

An AI render is a visual concept, not a technical document. It does not know your local planning rules, your conservation area constraints, whether that wall is load-bearing, or what the material actually costs installed.
